Learn about Sidmouth Hotels and how The Sidmouth Collection became what it is today.
Where it all began - The early days
1949 - George & Madge Seward purchased 5 Esplanade Terrace, known as 'Kingswood'
1951 - Operated it as a holiday apartment; The Kingswood
1953 - Building next door acquired in 1953 & combined to create the original Hotel - this included the famous 'brine baths' which were decommissioned
Chef & Mrs S
'CHEF & MRS S' January 1957 - George's Nephew Colin & his wife Joy leave their family baking business in Broadclyst to manage the Kingswood
Serious floral displays
Mark helped in the dining from a young age. And then moved into the kitchen and my parents began co- managing the site alongside Joy & Colin in the early 90's.
The year 2000
In 2000 Mark & Jo acquired The Elizabeth they applied the same customer service, food & decor that made the Kingswood so popular.
The Marlborough becomes Dukes
The Devoran merges with the Kingswood - 2008 and Mark & Jo purchase the Devoran (between the Kingswood & Elizabeth) & integrate the two with work during 2011. The Marlborough becomes Dukes Inn.
Here & now
We continue to improve the sites, with new facilities, features and decor, much like they did in 1984 and 2008.
Our guests know us best
"Our room was clean, comfortable with a great view of the seafront. Food was delicious. Staff very attentive and helpful. The hotel is not for young people
but the older person young at heart. We enjoyed ourselves so much we have booked again for next year."
"We had a sea facing room with a balcony and from the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble. We reserved a parking place at the rear and the whole hotel was spotless, with a good choice of menu"
"Beautiful view from our balcony and it was too hot to sit out- not a complaint as plenty of seating outside with umbrellas. Staff - especially the reception team - are superb and made our stay very comfortable"
"Everybody is so welcoming and helpful, nothing is too much trouble"
"the hand-picked staff are so friendly and genuinely helpful. The Kingswood remains the same, despite the continuous programme of upgrading
and improvement - satisfying, courteous and compassionate"
"Comfortable & homely atmosphere, perfect company & excellent food"
It has been and incredible journey so far!
