East Devon walks – our favourite picks

Explore the best East Devon walks: From Ancient Heaths to the Jurassic Coast

East Devon holds a magic all its own, offering a diverse landscape that rivals any in the South West. From the prehistoric whispers of the Woodbury Common pebblebeds to the dramatic red sandstone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, these footpaths are a masterclass in variety. Whether you’re looking for 240-million-year-old history or a "lost world" hidden beneath the cliffs, these three East Devon walks offer the best of the region's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In this guide, we cover:

  • Woodbury Common: An ancient Iron Age hill fort loop.

  • Sidmouth to Ladram Bay: Iconic red cliff views.

  • Beer Head: A rugged trek through the "lost world" Undercliff.

Woodbury Common & The Pebblebeds

The route: A loop starting at Woodbury Castle, an ancient Iron Age Hill Fort.

Why we love it: The "Pebblebed" landscape is over 240 million years old. It’s wide, open and offers 360-degree views stretching from Exmouth to the distant peaks of Dartmoor.

Sidmouth to Ladram Bay

The route: Follow the South West Coast Path west over the dramatic Peak Hill.

Why we love it: This route offers the best "big reveal" of the Jurassic Coast. You’ll be rewarded with views of the iconic red sandstone sea stacks at Ladram Bay – a perfect spot for a mid-walk photo before heading back for lunch.

Beer Head & Hooken Cliffs

The route: A circular loop from the village of Beer, dropping down into the mysterious Undercliff.

Why we love it: It feels like stepping into a hidden jungle. Formed by a massive landslip in 1790, this "lost world" is a wilderness of towering chalk pinnacles and rare wildlife. It’s rugged, atmospheric and a contrast to the clifftops above.

If you're looking for the perfect place to rest your head while you explore the area, The Elizabeth is our choice. Comfortable beds, rooms overlooking the sea and incredible locally sourced food and drink. With the sea a mere 50 steps away, you'll be able to soak up all that the Jurassic Coast has to offer.
